Characteristics ~ ~ ~ ~

Henodus, with its vague resemblance to modern turtles and terrapins, is not very closely related to them at all. Henodus was a placoderm a group of early barrel chested marine reptiles. Henodus grew to around one meter in length and is estimated to reach around 100 lbs and to have lived in fresh water. Henodus only had one tooth on each side instead having a beak because of this Henodus is believed to be a filter feeder however some more modern studies believe that it was a Herbivore because of evidence from the similarly broad faced Atopodentatus.  Henodus shell was very wide and made of plastron of boney scutes that were neatly arranged. Henodus had small limbs that wouldn't help it swim and a crocodile like tail with two parallel rows of scutes. It’s weird spike like horns on it’s head and its eyes were strangely far forward on it's head.

History & Fossils ~ ~ ~ ~

Most of what we know about Henodus comes from the holotype specimen GPIT/RE/3000 discovered by Friedrich von Huene in 1936. However more Henodus cranium material has been discovered as of 2025
