Diplodocus

Dip-low-doe-cus
Skull of Brachiosaurus

Name meaning: Double Beam

Time Period: Kimmeridgian to Tithonian (Late Jurassic) 152.07–149.1 Mya

Locations: Colorado/Montana/Utah/Wyoming-Morrison Formation

Taxonomy: Sauropoda-Diplodocidae

Species: D. carnegii D. hallorum

Characteristics ~ ~ ~ ~

Diplodocus had two species D. carnegii D. hallorum with the main difference being size with the former being 24-26 meters long and 13 metric tons while the ladder was 29-33 meters and 23-38 metric tons. Diplodocus swallowed gastroliths to aid in chewing since Diplodocus didn't chew rather its 35 peg shaped teeth striped the leaves then immediately swallowed this quickly damaged teeth causing them to become being worn down and replaced within a month and Diplodocus having around 5 replacement teeth in it's skull at a time. Diplodocus had a 8 meter neck with 15 neck vertabrae it's prosauropod ancestors only had 10, this is because Diplodocus converted some of it's thoracic (back) vertebrae into neck ones having fewer thoracic vertabrae than reptiles. Diplodocus had low neck posture holding its neck slighly bellow its hips its head angled downwards. As Diplodocus ate from low growth plants to avoid competition from sauropods like Camarasaurus amd Brachiosaurus who held their necks upwards to eat from treetops. Diplodocus tail had around 80 vertabrae took up half of the animals length and was used as a defensive weapon Diplodocus eggs only took around 2-3 months to hatch took around 10 years to reach sexual maturity indicating it had a high metabolism as a juvenile and a high infant mortality rate as they grew as quickly as they could. It's main predators were Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Torvosaurus of which likely could not take donw a full grown Diplodocus alone.

History & Fossils ~ ~ ~ ~

By Heinrich Harder, frankly his sprawling lizard posture looks ridiculous I would love to try and see him run away from something. Also its stomach would also form moats in the groups due to how close it was. found at the Pittsburgh Carnegie Museum of Natural History,

Dippy is considered to be the most famous dinosaur skeleton in the world.

Jurassic World Evolution I believe the fact that sauropods cannot fight back against carnivores when they should be able to defend themselves is most apparent with Diplodocus. It should absoulutly be killing theropods with that wip tail but no.

Jurassic World Alive

I wanted to talk about jwa in particular because I love this promotional photo in particular

Walking With Dinosaurs

Nice thing is about Diplodocus is that since he's so long he takes up mulitple image slots
